Menstrual Cup FAQ

No, it shouldn’t hurt at all.

The EvoGal menstrual cup is made of a soft silicone material for maximum comfort. You should not feel any pain when it’s in use. If you are experiencing any discomfort then you need to remove it, rinse it off and reinsert.  In fact, if it’s worn properly you won’t feel anything so try to not forget about it. (wink)

When you start using the EvoGal menstrual cup it’s normal to experience leaks at first while you get to know how to effectively use it. Be patient and give yourself time to get to know your body. In this initial stage you might feel better using a panty liner in case of leakage (yes, we know its not very eco-friendly, but it is only temporary).

Most importantly don’t give up after your 1st try. It may take you a few days or a few periods to get the hang of it completely, but once you do, you will never look back. You may need to play around with the different folding methods to find the one which works the best for you. Refer to our How To page for our tricks. You can also check out menstrual cup folds for the various fold options.

If your EvoGal menstrual cup leaks it means that there has been no seal created.
Remove the cup and rinse it thoroughly. Fold your EvoGal menstrual cup (You may want to try a different fold) insert it again.

Make sure that once your EvoGal menstrual cup is in, that it pops open. Then tug down on it a bit. If there is an airtight seal you should be able to feel the suction inside while tugging at it. That means you are good to go. If, however, it comes out then you know there was no proper seal formed. Refer to our How To page for our tricks.

Practice makes perfect. Don’t give up !!!

The EvoGal menstrual cup is made from 100% medical grade silicone. It is BPA free, free from latex, toxins, and is hypoallergenic which means that it is body safe. For more detailed information on the general safety of menstrual cups please refer to our menstrual cup safety page.

You can leave it in for up to 12 hours at a time, depending on how heavy your flow is.

The first few times you take it out you might be surprised to find how little fluid there actually is inside the cup compared to when using tampons, as tampons or pads don’t really give you an accurate estimate of how much fluid is being accumulated.

You will get to know how long you can leave it in as you keep using it. When you are getting started check the level of the fluid each time you remove it and you will get to know your body better and plan your emptying routine better.

You need to wash / wipe your EvoGal Menstrual cup every time you take it out. You should empty it at least twice a day (morning and night).

Before and After your cycle, take a dedicated pot and boil in water for 5 – 10 minutes. Make sure there is enough water in the pot and that the cup is not at the bottom of the pot, otherwise it might get damaged.

You can also put your cup in a container filled with boiled water and use a brush with a sterilizing agent to clean it. To avoid discoloration over time we recommend you use a brush to clean it thoroughly after each cycle. Once you have cleaned it you can store it safely until your next cycle.

Don’t forget to clean the rim and the holes of the cup. A small brush will aid in keeping the holes squeaky clean.
Do not clean your EvoGal Menstrual cup with the following items – as it may ruin the cup:

  • Oil based or scented soaps
  • Bleach
  • Baking soda
  • Rubbing alcohol or vinegar
  • Dishwashing soap

We woman can always make a plan no matter where we are. If you are in a public place with no sink in the stall to rinse it after removal, you can wash your hands outside the stall and simply empty it out as normal inside the toilet and then use toilet paper to wipe out any excess fluid. You can also take a water bottle with you and rinse it over the toilet (Just don’t drop it inside the toilet please), or take some toilet paper and make it damp to help clean the cup.

No, you will need to remove the cup if you plan on having sex.

You can use a menstrual cup if you have a IUD. Generally the IUD string is high enough inside not to interfere with the cup. However some strings may be lower down which might cause you to accidentally pull on it when you are removing the cup, which may result in dislodgement of the IUD. Just make sure that you are aware of the string of the IUD at all times. If your string is long and you still want to use the EvoGal Menstrual cup, speak to your gynecologist to see if the string can be shortened. Read up more about it on our safety page

When you are wearing the Evogal Menstrual cup, you can do whatever you like except for vaginal intercourse. You can hike, swim, sleep, do gymnastics, go jogging, do weight training, you can hang upside down from the ceiling if you want to. And the best part – you can sneeze without any worry about changing your shorts ?

Using the EvoGal menstrual cup will allow you to get to know your body UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL – which is never a bad thing. You might find that inserting it and removing it will leave you having to wash your hands (which you should do anyway), but once its in properly there is no mess and no fuss.

The small takes up to 25ml and the large takes up to 30ml at a time.

One tampon holds an average of 5ml – so one cup can hold the equivalent of 5 – 6 tampons.

Menstrual fluid develops odors when exposed to air meaning you shouldn’t experience these odors with the EvoGal Menstrual Cup like you would with tampons and pads. We also recommend not wearing the cup for more than 12 hours at a time, as this might aid in odors developing.

Discoloration over time is normal, and does not warrant a replacement. You can avoid heavy discoloration by cleaning it with our recommended cleaning methods.

You can wash the cup and then cut it into small pieces and dispose of it in the waste.

No. The EvoGal menstrual cup is not a birth control device. It is a menstrual management product and should only be used during the time of menstruation.

No, This is not recommended.

Alcohol may ruin the silicone material, so please avoid that. Dettol, Savlon and Milton are good sterilizers to use.

The vaginal canal is only a muscular tube with elasticity. The cup cannot get lost inside you because there is no where for it to go. It simply rests at the base of the canal against your vaginal wall. If it has been inserted correctly it will sit low enough for easy reach. Simply break the airtight seal and remove the cup.

Avoid using the EvoGal Menstrual cup if you have:

  • A yeast infection
  • Using topical medication in or around the vagina
  • Experiencing postnatal bleeding.

If you have used a cup while you had a yeast infection, it is best to discard the cup and replace it. Consult your general health practitioner before inserting any products after childbirth.

Medical grade silicone can (technically) last up to 25 years. But we should also remember that our bodies differ from one woman to the next. Our PH, vaginal bacteria and acidity levels are different which could affect the lifespan of the EvoGal Menstrual Cup. Additionally, the way you care for it will also determine the lifespan.

Even though we say it can last up to 10 years, we recommend to replace it every couple years.

Immediately replace your EvoGal Menstrual cup when any of the following occur:

  • You see any cracks or tears in the cup
  • There is heavy staining or a foul odor
  • It’s leaking in a way its never leaked before
  • You see a powder residue or any type of flaking on the cup
  • There is a grainy texture.

Menstrual cups are incredibly comfortable. You shouldn’t feel your menstrual cup once you insert it.

If you feel your cup when you walk or sit or hurts, something isn’t right. This could be a sign that your cup is not inserted correctly, it’s the wrong size, the stem is too long or the actual cup itself is not designed for comfort.

We have customers who had similar issues with other cups and are now much more comfortable after switching to the EvoGal Menstrual Cup.

Yes. Menstrual cups sit in the vaginal canal and not your urethra, where urine exits from. It is the same as using tampons and will not affect urinating.

Yes. Some people may choose to wear them to try and reduce discharge.

Generally, if you follow the rules of safe menstrual cup wear, you should be able to safely wear one every day. If you have a significant amount of discharge, though, you may want to rule out an underlying medical condition, such as a yeast infection. In this case, you should consult your medical practitioner.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists lists menstrual cups as a menstrual management option but doesn’t endorse one method over another. The decision to use a menstrual cup is your preference.

Menstrual Cups are generally safe, convenient and comfortable when used properly and offer many advantages over conventional sanitary pads and tampons, however your should consider that

  • They need to be sterilized between periods
  • Emptying menstrual cups may be messy
  • They may not fit properly, especially if your uterus is too low or you have other anatomical concerns related to the uterus or cervix
  • Need to rinse the menstrual cup every time you empty it
  • Removing and inserting the cup may not be convenient for some women
  • Vaginal discomfort.

We provided some answers and possible solutions to these issues in the other questions above.
